medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

This is a question that I have been wanting to ask for a long time.

What happened to the women?

It seems that there were periods with monasticism & the mendicants -- early
Irish monasticism, Cluniac movement, early Dominicans & Franciscans -- when
exceptionally large numbers of young men went into monasteries. What
happened to the women they did not marry?
