medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture This is a question that I have been wanting to ask for a long time. What happened to the women? It seems that there were periods with monasticism & the mendicants -- early Irish monasticism, Cluniac movement, early Dominicans & Franciscans -- when exceptionally large numbers of young men went into monasteries. What happened to the women they did not marry?
