Dear Colleague, Our April programme of events includes the following new courses: 4th - Enterprise Information Architecture (afternoon) (www.aslib.com/training/3/03.html) Increasingly, organisations are expected to know what they know and to use it not only for business success, but also to address their social, environmental and other regulatory obligations. But many organisations find that their information base is scattered across numerous incompatible sources, resources and systems, developed by different teams, at different times and for different purposes. This afternoon seminar introduces the concept of Enterprise Information Architecture (EIA), a compound discipline whose purpose is to provide a blueprint for the integration, management, and deployment of these disparate corporate knowledge and information resources. 5th - Building and Deploying a Corporate Taxonomy (www.aslib.com/training/4/06.html) A Corporate Taxonomy is the backbone of an organization's information architecture. Whether the focus is on records management, document management or knowledge management, a Corporate Taxonomy is key to effective storage and retrieval. A Corporate Taxonomy is different from a subject taxonomy in that it is a taxonomy of business activities. Corporate Taxonomies are therefore specific to an organisation and have to be custom-built. This interactive workshop uses a blend of presentation, discussion and practical exercises to explain the purposes of a Corporate Taxonomy and to introduce delegates to technologies, techniques and tools for building and deploying them 11th - Using Networking Skills to Improve Your Information Service (afternoon) (www.aslib.com/training/2/16.html) Networking is potentially one of the most valuable skills an information professional can have. Building up a network of contacts means will help you do your job more effectively. For example, it will help you to negotiate contracts more effectively, being able to benchmark your service with those in other similar organisations, or by influencing the development of products or services, so that you get the kind of services that meet your employer's needs. It also means that you will have others with whom you can share thoughts and ideas; compare notes; and who can help you to keep up to date with developments in the information profession. Networking can also be used in your continuing professional development and in some cases can play a key role in the recruitment process. 13th - Understanding and Assessing Information Needs (www.aslib.com/training/4/24.html) Understanding the information needs of users - individuals and groups - is an absolute necessity of an information worker, or information service, is to be effective. This course gives both a thorough understanding of the concepts, and practical skills for understanding and assessing information, from the immediate needs of a single user needing information (the 'reference interview') to the all-encompassing information needs of a whole organisation (part of an information management audit). 18th - Interviewing Skills (afternoon) (www.aslib.com/training/2/06.html) Recruiting new staff and management isn't about taking on someone who 'interviews well'. It's about seeing how they will fit in with the team and the organisations culture as well as the skills, knowledge, experience and behaviours that they can bring to that organisation. It's also about getting the right person who, will not only fill the gap but, will develop and enhance that job role in the future. If we just replace someone who has left with a similar person, we stand still - and that means disaster for the organisation in the long term. This workshop will introduce you to a structured approach but will also give you the tools to take back to the workplace and ensure that your selection and recruitment of new employees is fair, effective and enables you to get it right every time. If you would like more information on these, or our other events, please do not hesitate to contact me.
