How place affects the body

Abstract

Rates of illness and death vary between different parts of the country. A great deal of work has tried to determine what causes these differences. In particular, there is much debate over whether the area you live in has a role to play in determining your health. Research is now discovering how interactions between the physical and social environments we live in can affect our bodies and our health. Examples are drawn from work on heart and lung disease.

Dr Richard Mitchell is Associate Director of the Research Unit In Health, Behaviour and Change at the University of Edinburgh. His research is focused on inequalities in health in the UK, what causes them and how they can be tackled. He is particularly interested in the influences of physical and social environment on health.
