THE ROLE OF TOBACCO CONTROL IN THE DENORMALISATION OF SMOKING
LYNN MACFADYEN PhD STUDENTSHIP IN TOBACCO CONTROL

(This award has been instituted in recognition of Dr Lynn MacFadyen and the
unique contribution she made to tobacco control research.)

The Centre for Tobacco Control Research invites applications for a full
time postdoctoral research studentship in the field of tobacco control.
The studentship will include a stipend and fees for a period of up to 4
years (FT), sponsored by Cancer Research UK.  The starting date is expected
to be from May 2005.   To be eligible, the candidate must have at least a
2:1 degree (preferably a First Class honours and/or a Masters Qualification
with some research experience) in a social science discipline and have
extensive statistical skills.  An interest in social marketing would be
advantageous.  The student will be registered for a higher degree at the
University of Stirling or the Open University.

The main aim of the Studentship is to examine the impact of tobacco control
policies.  Specific hypotheses will be defined by the student, but research
questions may include: what impact do different policies have across the
social scale and, by extension, what consequences do they have for
inequalities?; how do young people respond to policies notionally targeted
at adults, such as smoking in public places?; are there unintended negative
effects to specific policies?; and what if any evidence is there that
different policies combine to produce an enhanced cumulative effect, as
thinking from social norms would have us believe? The studentship will be
supervised by Professor Gerard Hastings.
