medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Odd how this message has shown up on our list after being sent, apparently, on 30 April 2004, but e-mail can be very slow at times! Anyway, if anyone needs general advice regarding transportation to Kalamazoo, I suggest you check the site:

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Hi,
I will be travelling to Kalamazoo for the first time next Wednesday, from London, to attend congress, and present on Sunday morning.

I am flying to Chicago, and then getting Greyhound or Train (£340 + US$64 or $68), as this costs far less than flying to Kalamazoo (£1969 is cheapest economy class flight from London to Battle-Creek!!!!!!! It would cost me £155 return from Chicago to Battle Creek, so a local flight is also out of the question).

I am wondering which method of travel people recommend, bus or train?

Can I travel on a US train without a prior seat reservation, if there is no 'U' against that service on the timetable? The Amtrak website is ambiguous, and sometimes I get a red message saying no seats available, and sometimes I don't, for the same trains, on the same day! I don't want to book any seats now, in case of flight delays.

Of course, if anyone is driving from Chicago to K'zoo on May 5th after 16.00 and returning on May 10th to arrive before 15.00, and would like to split petrol money/car rental, then please email me privately.

Moderators please excuse the off-topic nature of this message.
