medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Today (6. February) is the feast day of:

Mel and Melchu (d. c. 488)  Legend tells that the brothers Mel and
Melchu were nephews of St. Patrick.  They went to Ireland with Pat,
worked with him as missionaries, and became bishops of Armagh and
Ardagh.

Vedast (Vaast) (d. 539)  Vedast worked with St. Remigius as a
missionary to the Franks.  He became bishop of Rheims in 499.

Amand (d. c. 679)  Amand was a monk, then a hermit, then was
consecrated as a missionary bishop in 629.  He evangelized in
Flanders, Carinthia, and probably Germany.  A. founded a number of
monasteries in Belgium and may have been bishop of Maastricht for a
time.

Guarinus (d. 1159)  Guarinus was a native of Bologna who became an
Augustinian canon at Mortaria.  When he was elected bishop he went
into hiding until somebody else was elected.  But late in life he was
appointed bishop of Praeneste and given a cardinalate at the same
time.

A modern collection of saints: The Martyrs of Japan (d. 1597)  A
group of 26 Catholic Christians crucified in Japan during Toyotomi
Hideyoshi's persecution.  They were canonized in 1862.
