medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Today (18. January) is the feast day of:

Volusian (d. 496) Volusian was a noble of Tours who became bishop
there in 488. He was driven out by Arian Visigoths in 496 and went
to Spain. One tradition says he was martyred there.

Deicolus (d. c. 625) Deicolus was a native of Leinster, a brother of
St. Gall. He accompanied Columbanus to Francia in 576. When C. was
expelled in 610, D. was too old to accompany him, so instead became a
hermit at Lure until his death.

Ulfrid (d. 1028) Ulfrid was a missionary in eastern Germany and
Sweden (from England?) According to tradition, he chopped down a
cult image of Thor and a group of disgruntled Scandinavians responded
by chopping *him* down.

Fazzio of Verona (d. 1272) Fazzio was a goldsmith. He went on
pilgrimage to both Compostela and Rome; his experiences apparently
inspired him to found the Order of the Holy Spirit in Cremona, a
religious ordered dedicated to the care of pilgrims and the sick.
