medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

8. January is the feast day of:

Apollinaris of Hierapolis (d. c. 179) Apollinaris was bishop of
Hierapolis in Phrygia. He was famed for his teaching and his writing
(none of which is extant). He was called "the apologist" for the
defense of Christianity he wrote to Marcus Aurelius---and which seems
to have led to a period of tolerance. He also attacked various
heresies extensively.

Severinus of Noricum (d. c. 480) Severinus was either a Roman or an
African. He spent years as a hermit in the east before going to
Noricum (Austria) as a missionary. He was famous for preaching and
prophecy.

Gudula (d. c. 712) Gudula is the patron saint of Brussels. She was
related to the Carolingians, the daughter of a count. After her
education at Nivelles she went home to the family estate near
Morzelles and lived a pious and generous life.

Thorfinn (d. 1285) Thorfinn was from Trondheim (Norway). He became
a cathedral canon at Nidaros and after a time bishop of Hamar. T.
was exiled for supporting the archbishop against the king, visited
Rome, and ended up at the Cistercian abbey of Ter Doest near Bruges.
