medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture Today (26. January) is the feast day of: Timothy and Titus (1st cent.) These two disciples of Paul are both celebrated today. Timothy was the son of a Greek and a Jew, who replaced Barnabus as Paul's companion on his travels. After Paul's death, legend tells that Tim went to Ephesus and became bishop there, and was stoned to death when he made a fuss at the great festival in honor of Artemis. Titus served as Paul's secretary for a time and became head of the Christian community on Crete. He actually seems to have died of natural causes, at an advanced age. Paula (d. 404) Paula was a Roman noblewoman. She married and had five kids. When she was widowed, P. renounced the world and took to helping the poor. She became one of St. Jerome's groupies and eventually settled in Bethlehem with him. She became Jerome's closest confidante and assistant, helping him with his Bible work besides caring for him and building a large number of churches. She's the patron saint of widows. Alberic (d. 1109) Alberic was one of the trio of hermit-monks who founded Citeaux. He served as first prior there, becoming abbot when co-founder Robert returned to their original monastery of Molesmes. Eystein Erlandsson (d. 1188) Eystein was a Norwegian who served as royal chaplain before becoming second archbishop of Nidaros (Trondheim) in 1157. He did his best to reform the Norwegian church. E. never received a papal canonization, but was proclaimed a saint by a Norwegian synod in the 13th century. Margaret of Hungary (d. 1270) Margaret was a daughter of King Bela IV of Hungary. She was raised by Dominican nuns and became one herself at the age of twelve. She then proceeded to kill herself with excessive asceticism, dying at the age of 28. She was a noted visionary, and was credited with many miracles. M. was canonized in 1943. ********************************************************************** To join the list, send the message: join medieval-religion YOUR NAME to: [log in to unmask] To send a message to the list, address it to: [log in to unmask] To leave the list, send the message: leave medieval-religion to: [log in to unmask] In order to report problems or to contact the list's owners, write to: [log in to unmask] For further information, visit our web site: http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/medieval-religion.html
