Hello all, Here's some interesting news from Dublin Core. I almost missed this, it came through on a Dublin Core list between Christmas and New Year, so apologies for being slow in forwarding it ... Phil. -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Report on DC-Education Working Group meeting in Shanghai Date: Thu, 30 Dec 2004 10:01:26 -0800 From: Stuart Sutton <[log in to unmask]> Reply-To: Stuart Sutton <[log in to unmask]> To: [log in to unmask] Our apologies to the DC-Education Working Group for being so tardy in reporting here on the face-to-face breakout session and the DCMI/IEEE LOM working session at DC-2004 in Shanghai. Full details of the meeting are available through the Working Group homepage at DCMI. [1] Included there is a summary report of the meeting. [2] The report contains a link to the PowerPoint presentation used in the breakout session. [3] The decision to launch work on a full DC-Education Application Profile should be of particular interest to the Working Group. The work plan follows. We plan to follow the general outlines of the successful process established by the DC-Libraries Working Group in the development of the DC-Libraries Application Profile. Establish Drafting Committee membership Establish Drafting Committee process and calendar Continue controlled vocabulary work Set development priorities and processes Draft proposals for top-priority vocabularies Vet draft proposals on DC-Education mailing list Begin liaison process with potential maintenance agencies Liaise with IEEE LOM on inclusion of LOM elements Complete preliminary AP draft for comment Revise draft for vetting at DC-2005 (Madrid, Spain--September 12-15, 2005) We also had a very successful "community" meeting with Working Group members with interests in both the Dublin Core Education work and the IEEE LOM work. The meeting in Shanghai was the second annual meeting of this ad hoc group interested in promoting the well being and interoperability of the two initiatives and their work product. The discussion focused sharply on the continuing work of the Ottawa Communique and the need for being able to mix elements and properties from the two metadata schemes. While that work is complex and slow, progress is being made. Several members of the group agreed to work on a paper for formal publication that clearly defines the design issues in the development of an application profile that draws from multiple schemes based in disparate abstract models. It was noted in the meeting that this problem is not peculiar to the work here in education and training but is being experienced elsewhere--e.g., the proposed DC-Libraries Application Profile mixes RDF properties (Dublin Core) with XML elements (MODS). We also agreed to pursue the task of making metadata for education and training a permanent track in the DCMI Internatational Conference in order to provide a useful and proper home for targeted metadata research, development and practice. Thus, in the coming months, we will be working with the planners of DC-2005 in Madrid on making such a track a reality.
