*Apologies for multiple postings* Centre for learning and teaching (cltad) Don't miss! Still a few places available Supervising practice-based research in art and design; consideration of taught MAs, project MAs and research degrees led by Stuart Evans and Chris Smith 14th February 2005 Background and issues The creation of the AHRB - soon to become a funding council - has opened new possibilities of funding for study at both masters' and research degree level in art and design, not least in 'practice-based' research. There are new requirements from AHRB on research training at both levels and a new QAA code of practice. There is still a lack of familiarity about MPhil/PhD level study among many potential supervisors and students, and a shortage of experienced supervisors continues to inhibit the number of registrations for research degrees. Aims and rationale The intention is to give an overview of the supervision process at research degree level from the points of view of student and supervisor, and institution, and to discuss this in relation to experience gained from Masters' level courses. The workshop is based on the premise that experience in supervising at Masters' level, and of practice at an appropriate level in one's own field, form a stable basis for supervising practice-based research degrees. This course will briefly cover the following topics: values and purposes of a research degree recruitment, selection and vetting research proposals a brief introduction to research methods in art, design managing and documenting the supervision process completion and assessment Process The workshop will examine documentation from national and local sources to establish the range of what is expected from PhD students and supervisors. It will describe the supervision process, looking at some of the variations such as MPhil, PhD, professional doctorates and new route research degrees, and will compare these with project-based masters' courses. Through case studies, it will explore issues around supervision, including the primacy of the final submission as opposed to research training and research process, and the rise of practice-based research methods. The programme will be informal, informative and interactive. As well as input from the facilitators there will be group work and the opportunity to share experiences. Outcomes The workshop will provide an outline of the supervision process at research degree level and compare this with supervision on project based masters' courses, looking at similarities and differences. There will be examples of different models of research degrees and discussion of where they are appropriate. It will help the supervisor moving from masters' to research degree level to feel more confident in guiding students and will help them to establish a view of the continuum of postgraduate study. About the workshop leaders Stuart Evans studied design and history of art and design and is an experienced research degree supervisor and examiner who works with practice and theory-based students. He has led workshops for a number of colleges, including Glasgow School of Art. He ran the CLTAD supervisor training programme for 4 years. Chris Smith is course director for the MA By Project course matrix and coordinator masters level courses at Sir John Cass/London Metropolitan University. to boo: phone 0207 514 8162 or via the web http://www.cltad.ac.uk Cost 155.00; venue: 65 Davies Street, London W1 -- ***************** Please note my new email address and amend your address book felix lam, cltad 65 davies street, london w1k 5da, UK +44 (0)207 514 8162 http://www.cltad.ac.uk
