Dear colleagues, Please find below a call for a session on "GenevaHerding practices and techniques: models and methodological tools for archaeozoological analysis" that we are organizing for the 2006 ICAZ conference in Mexico. You are very welcome to contact us and propose your participation. For now we just need your name and a communication title, in order to elaborate a preliminary program. Participants are invited to join the session and share observations on the husbandry of any domestic species from any part of the world, environmental setting and/or historical period (ethnographic and ethnoarchaeological observations of modern herders are also welcome). Herding practices and techniques may include anything related to reproduction control, demographic and genetic management (mate choice, animal exchanges), feeding, protection, exploitation, and the use of herding facilities (corrals, watering places). Ultimately the aim is to define how reference models should be used (how transferable are they, from one species and/or environment to another? How do they reflect management practices?) and to discuss the appropriate methodological tools to be used to infer this diversity in archaeozoological assemblages. Eventually this should lead us towards more qualified - and richer - statements and conclusions in our archaeozoological analyses. *************************** Marie Balasse Chargée de Recherche au CNRS, UMR 5197 Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle Dept.
