Transport & Social Exclusion: Three Years On
23 February 2006, Leeds

Three years have passed since the publication of the Social Exclusion Unit's seminal 'Making the Connections: Transport and Social Exclusion' report on 26 February 2003. Problems with transport and the location of services contribute to social exclusion by preventing people from participating in work and learning, accessing healthcare, food shopping and other local activities. This PTEG sponsored event will review progress, stimulate a renewed focus, highlight innovative work and bring together social policy and transport professionals.

Confirmed speakers include:

Neil Scales OBE Chief Executive and Director General Merseytravel
Stephen Joseph OBE Executive Director Transport 2000
Tony Grayling Associate Director IPPR
Bert Massie CBE Chair Disability Rights Commission (DRC)
Dr Annabel Bradbury Associate Research Fellow TRL
Yvonne Howard Director, Group Equality and Inclusion Team Transport for London
Iain Reeve Head of Transport Policy Hampshire County Council
Jessica Anderson Associate and Nicola Kane Associate JMP Consulting
Steve Thornton Chair West Yorkshire Road Safety Strategy Group
Juliet Solomon Senior Lecturer, Transport Research and Consultancy London Metropolitan University
Chair: Kris Beuret Director Social Research Associates

The conference will discuss:

*	What progress is the DfT making in implementing the Social Exclusion Unit's report?
*	What has changed since the report was published three years ago?
*	Is our transport system open to all - including disabled people?
*	What progress have PTEs and Transport for London (TfL) made in tackling social exclusion?
*	How can social exclusion be tackled through accessibility planning?
*	How does the pooling of health, education and social transport budgets reduce social exclusion in the Netherlands?
*	How is cutting road casualties, and the fear of such casualties, reducing social exclusion?
