PhD scholarships in tourism, leisure, and mobility

Apologies for cross-postings

The Department of Tourism at the University of Otago invites applications for School of Business Dean's PhD Scholarships available for 2006 for the following research topics:

Leisure, travel and mobility patterns of recent and extended-stay migrants

This project will identify the leisure and travel behaviours of different migrant populations in New Zealand including the relationship between travel behaviours and transnational social and economic networks.

The changing impact and importance of foreign investment in New Zealand tourism

Despite the significance of foreign investment for tourism in New Zealand there is little comprehensive research on the nature and implications of foreign investment and its relationship to the development of tourism businesses, regional development and regulatory and policy systems. This project will examine these issues with respect to a range of tourism small business enterprises.

Work, leisure, lifecourses and mobilities

This project will examine the economic and social implications of highly mobile populations including seasonal tourism and hospitality employees and second home owners, particularly with respect to macro- and micro-level accounts of productivity and implications for lifestyles and work practices

These scholarships are for NZ$18,000 plus payment of course fees.
The link below contains an application form for our new Dean's PhD Scholarships.  The closing date is 1 November. Interested applicants are encouraged to contact Dr Neil Carr (PhD coordinator for the Tourism Department at the University of Otago) in the first instance to discuss these scholarships and research topics. As part of this process interested applicants are asked to submit a copy of their CV, evidence of their research abilities (e.g., electronic version of Masters/Honours dissertations/theses, conference papers, or publications), and a 2 page document that discusses how they see the project they are interested in evolving and proposes the data requirements and data collection method/s they would employ for the project. Once this information has been reviewed by relevant staff in the tourism department applicants will be encouraged to formally apply through the university’s Scholarships Office (all details are on the application).

Please distribute this information widely to potential applicants
