*** APOLOGIES FOR CROSS POSTING *** *Recognising Learning Through Credit* <http://www.seec-office.org.uk/> *SEEC Staff Development Event LEARNING OUTCOMES AND ASSESSMENT CRITERIA* Date: Tuesday November 15th 2005, 10:00 - 4:00 Venue: London Metropolitan University, North Campus - Stapleton House, 277- 281 Holloway Road , London N7 *Speaker: Dr Jennifer Moon* Jenny Moon has worked on programme structures since the mid-nineties, when she was involved in a credit development project in the Welsh Universities. She has run many workshops on levels, learning outcomes and assessment in the UK as well as in Europe and beyond - sometimes in connection with the Bologna processes. Jenny has written five books, two SEEC booklets (including "How to Use Learning Outcomes & Assessment Criteria", co author David Gosling), and a recent booklet for ESCalate (HEA subject centre for Education) as well as many articles. The subject matter centres around programme structures, effective short courses and workshops, and reflective and experiential learning. Her book "The Module and Programme Development Handbook" (2002, Routledge Falmer) is particularly relevant to this workshop. Jenny is shortly to join the School of Media Studies at Bournemouth University, and also works as an independent consultant. *Background* Clearly expressed learning outcomes and related assessment criteria contribute to /"clear and accurate information for students, employers and others about the content, standards and delivery of programmes"/ (Dearing). Descriptions of the learning outcomes that students are expected to achieve are now almost universally required by both QAA and institutions at programme and module level. But writing good learning outcomes, and their associated assessment criteria, continues to be a challenge and educationally controversial. *The Workshop* This is a practical workshop, which will focus on developing the skills involved in writing learning outcomes and assessment criteria within an outcomes-based model of course design. Credit frameworks require each unit of study to be positioned at a given level of study with defined learning outcomes. Students are then assessed to determine whether they have achieved the learning outcomes in order to be awarded credit. In order to do this it is necessary to devise assessment criteria appropriate to the level of study. How many learning outcomes should there be? How clearly defined should learning outcomes be? How are the requirements for achieving different grades specified? How can assessment criteria clarify what is expected of students? Can assessment criteria create more consistent marking? This workshop will examine these issues and will help academic staff to write learning outcomes and assessment criteria. *The workshop will be of particular interest to any member of the teaching staff who has a responsibility for designing, writing and assessing modules and programmes, and for staff involved in quality assurance processes.* ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Programme* 10.00 Registration and Coffee/Tea 10.30 Levels and Learning Outcomes within a Credit Framework 11.30 Group Task: Writing Learning Outcomes 12.30 LUNCH 13.15 Assessment Within a Credit Framework: Using Assessment Criteria 14.15 Group Task: Writing Assessment Criteria 15.10 Tea/Coffee 15.25 Plenary Discussion 16.00 Close ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Booking Details* Please download the booking form <http://www.seec-office.org.uk/Staff%20Development%20Event%2015-11-05.doc> and return it to the SEEC Administrator: As an email attachment to: [log in to unmask] Or by post to: SEEC c/o Learning Development Unit London Metropolitan University Calcutta House Old Castle Street London E1 7NT Once your registration has been received, you will be sent a confirmation email. -- =============================== SEEC c/o Learning Development Unit London Metropolitan University Calcutta House Old Castle Street London E1 7NT Tel: 020 7320 1105 Fax: 020 7320 3528 ===============================
