Edit boxes in R14 have had a number of problems.
This link identifies a problem in one m-file when tabbing out of an edit box.

I've also seen problems in WinXP on multi-line edit boxes. TMW suggested disabling the JavaFigures
feature.
feature('JavaFigures',0)
I don't know if it will help you, but is probably worth trying.
