RE: Discussion on Maternity Statistics

Although maternity statistics are my specialist area, I have found this 'debate' very frustrating as I simply don't have the time that some people have have to read and send long emails during the day. At the same time, I think the usefulness of the debate has been severely limited because others with knowledge of the subject also have only had time to make one or two very informative contributions in between the much more lengthy contributions from others.

Operative delivery rates by mother's age over the years can be found in page A7.21.1 of 'Birth counts: statistics of pregnancy and childbirth' by Alison Macfarlane and Miranda Mugford. Publication details are cited in the bulletin. They weren't included in this year's bulletin. If you are particularly interested in having them, ring or email Lesz Lancucki whose contact details are in the bulletin. As of April 1, he is now p[art of the Health and Social Care Information Centre, but is still sitting in Skipton House with the same phone number.

PS. I'm not a professor of midwifery Ray. I'm a statistician, not a midwife!

I'm sorry that what looks like an important discussions of the influence or
statistics, or the lack of influence of statistics, has been taken off the
list.   Can we have a statement from the list owner about how this has
happened?

Can Alison also supply a vital bit of evidence from the earler discussion,
about how the operative delivery rates vary by age group at a particular
point of time - such as that shown by the latest published statistics.

Maybe Alison, Professor of mid-wifery, could post those figures (that are
'unfortunately not enough published')as a complement to her superb chart?'
