For Einstein Year we've found that getting on to the BBC News Online homepage is a fantastic way to get noticed. We had huge peaks in the traffic to www.kungfuscience.org, www.crescentmoonwatch.org and www.einsteinyear.org when they appeared there. Getting featured on BBC News Online involves pitching your story to them in the same way as to any other media so the main thing is to have a great story (which you do) and then talk to them directly. I'm afraid I don't have the name of our contact to hand, but your press office should be able to get it. Hope this helps, but if you want more detail, feel free to contact me off list. This is what a new website designed to engage the public in a mass-experiment is trying to find out. The aim of the website is to increase awareness of sound psychology, by examining what makes a sound unpleasant to hear. You audition a sound and then vote for how horrible it is. Your votes will give us an insight into what is the worst sound in the world, and maybe why it is the worst sound. The URL is: www.sound101.org. Feel free to play on the website and tell your friends about it if you like it. But I'm also looking for advice: Does anyone on the mailing list have experience of getting such websites known/noticed. I'm aware of the issues about submitting the website to directories and search engines and about how to design website to get high hit rates. Next week we are doing conventional publicity for press/radio/TV. What I don't know is how to get on the "Best of the web" type websites/newspaper columns. Does anyone have suggestions? I don't even know which are the most influential listings that you need to get on (beyond search engines and directories).
