Two great demos that we use at Techniquest that look really magical are

Solid carbon dioxide pellets in water with fairy liquid. You get a fantastic cauldron effect with bubbles of spooky looking water vapour (and colourless carbon dioxide gas)! You can even place candles around the bowl and they will go out (carbon dioxide will extinguish them)! A perfect Fire extinguisher potion, Snape would be proud!

A chemiluminescence reaction using powdered luminol (and others, not sure of exact chemical composition sorry). Add powder to water in spherical flask, swirl and they will glow wonderfully. "Lumos!"

If you want to branch away from Alchemy you could always do a Bernoulli demo. At least half the children who play with the Bernoulli Ball wave their hands above it and chant "Wingardium Leviosa" (Harry Potters levitating spell).

Hope this helps, good luck,

Jo Harris
