Scientists as journalists: the BA Media Fellowship scheme

Applications for the BA Media Fellowship Scheme are now open. This scheme is intended to create greater awareness and understanding of the workings of the media among practising engineers and scientists. It enables scientists to undertake a secondment (on salary, from their employer) of 3 to 8 weeks with a media organisation, working alongside journalists to gain first hand experience of the news accumulation and selection process. Placements take place during the summer and include a week at the BA Festival of Science, this year in Dublin.

Scientists have the opportunity to experience life as a journalist enabling them to heighten their communication skills, make media contacts and on return to their job help promote their work and the work of others in their department and deal effectively with enquiries from the media.

This year the scheme will offer placements at print, broadcast and on-line news media, and previous hosts include the BBC Radio Science Unit, Nature, BBC Countryfile, The Daily Telegraph, The Irish Times and The Guardian.

The scheme is open to scientists, social scientists or engineers resident in the UK with a minimum of 2 years experience (including postgraduate students) working in an academic or research institution, industry or the Civil Service.

Those interested in applying for this year’s media fellowships should visit  www.the-ba.net/mediafellows for further information and an online application form.

Applications close Friday 15 April 2005.
