Message from The Higher Education Academy Physical Sciences Centre Professional Development Workshop - 'Sharing Good Practice in Outreach Activities' Date: Wednesday 7th December 2005 Time: 10.30am - 3.30pm Venue: University of Warwick Workshop Aims Attracting more students is an ongoing issue for the vast majority of higher education. This is made more prominent by the government's drive to encourage more students to enter higher education. Attracting more students is particularly challenging for the physical sciences where the overall percentage of students entering higher education is decreasing. To address this issue however, there are a number of exciting and interesting initiatives undertaken by institutions, as well as national initiatives such as AimHigher. To encourage more students to study physical science courses institutions and departments must therefore engage in a variety of outreach activities, aimed at showing potential students the benefits of studying a physical science course. Examples of outreach activity commonly undertaken include school visits, science weeks and visits to universities for potential students. The aim of this workshop is to provide you with some examples of interesting and innovative outreach activities which could be used or adapted to attract more students to study physical sciences courses. There will also be opportunities to discuss common objectives and share ideas about how to engage students more and interest them in a science based education.
