The most fully-described flavour of author-date citation systems is that of the American Psychological Association (APA), which is widely used in social sciences. I can appreciate the lack of desire to adopt an American standard, but I think there would be considerable gains in clarity and ability to teach correct referencing if there were few variants in play. The current version of EndNote has, I believe, about 1,300 different formats.
