The following online courses are being offered by the Oxford Centre for
staff and Learning Development:

Detecting and dealing with plagiarism: institutional responsibilities in a
holistic approach to deterring plagiarism

12 October – 14 November 2005

This online course aims to give you time and space to explore some of the
complex issues around plagiarism. This course will focus on institutional
responsibilities and policies for managing the rising number of cases of
student plagiarism in higher and further education. Using weekly
interactive tasks and readings, we will evaluate detection strategies,
consider how best to confirm cases of plagiarism and select punishments that
are transparent, consistent and defensible. The stress is on institutional
policies that are adequate for handling the growing number of cases and the
increasing possibility that punishment decisions will be challenged.
Finally, we will discuss and evaluate institutional policies and procedures
as a whole, identifying the characteristics of those fit for the world of
2005 higher and further education. The course will be an opportunity to
discuss practices with others and interact with recognised experts.

Defining, detecting and designing out plagiarism: academic responsibilities
in a holistic approach to deterring plagiarism

1 February – 6 March 2006

This online course aims to give you time and space to explore some of the
complex issues around plagiarism over four weeks. The course will start with
activities which illustrate the distinctions between definitions of
plagiarism and related phenomena. Then there will be an opportunity to work
in a small group to 'design out' plagiarism from a prepared case study and
discuss the implications for course and assessment design. Finally you will
practise strategies for detecting cases of plagiarism including the use of
plagiarism detection software. The course is highly participative and
scheduled around weekly activities where you will share and gain feedback on
your developing ideas. You will be supported by a key text authored by the
course tutor, specially developed resources and experienced online tutors.
