A Ph.D. position (BAT-IIa 2/3) is immediately available in the laboratory of
Dr. Hans-Jürgen Deyerl (Oberassistent) in close collaboration with the group
of Prof. Dr. Dieter Gerlich (Gasentladungs- und Ionenphysik ) at the
Chemnitz University of Technology. The research is in the area photophysics
of biorelevant molecules at very low temperatures using a combination of
laser spectroscopy with multipole ion traps. Our group is world leading in
ion trap technologies used in a variety of applications for basic research
in astrophysics, biophysics and analytical chemistry.

The main goal of this Ph.D. program is the study of the UV - and VUV
stability of biorelevant molecules using a newly developed apparatus for the
combination of an electrospray ion source (ESI) with a temperature variable
multipole ion trap. Protonated amino acids, peptides, carbohydrates or
lipids will be transferred into the ion trap and will be excited by UV or
VUV radiation to obtain the absorption spectrum. The possible photophysical
processes of fragmentation, isomerization, ionization to the doubly charged
ion or luminescence will be monitored by mass spectrometry and by optical
detection of the emitted light respectively.

Ambitious candidates with a strong interest in experimental work and a
masters degree (Diplom) in physics or chemistry or a related field are
invited to apply. Applications should include a curriculum vitae and a list
of publications or a brief statement of research experience. The position is
open to students of all nationalities. The resume including the names of
two professional references should be sent to:
