Well done CILIP for starting an RSS feed. But if I may be allowed a Friday afternoon pedant's moment, whether RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication or not depends on which side you take in the RSS wars: see the opening chapter of Ben Hammersley's Developing feeds with RSS and Atom O'Reilly 2005 0-596-00881-3 which landed here today. (BH is sole proprietor of the magnificent Ben Hammersley's Dangerous Precedent at http://www.benhammersley.com/weblog/index.html and writes for Guardian Online)

Or there's a good explanation in Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSS_%28file_format%29

CILIP makes it easier to keep up with new services, news and developments

RSS feed means users receive automatic notification of new pages on CILIP web site

CILIP: the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals is making it easier to keep up with new developments at the UK's leading membership organisation for library and information workers.  Instead of having to make regular visits to CILIP's web site, you can now find out what's new automatically, using the new RSS service.

Launched on the CILIP stand at last week's Library + information Show, RSS enables users to keep track of new pages as they are added to a web site without having to go and check the web site itself.  You can use it to check our press releases for news of latest developments and issues, find out about new CILIP services or newly published documents and reports, or keep track of developments in key initiatives such as the Framework of Qualifications.

To take advantage of any site providing RSS (which stands for 'Really Simple Syndication'), users first need to install an RSS reader on their computer.  CILIP's RSS page provides links to several readers offered by competing providers.  The reader will then list all the sites to which you have subscribed for feeds and then the newest postings on those sites.  You then see a summary description, and click through to the actual page to read its content in full.

"Our new RSS service makes it much easier for people to keep in touch with the latest developments at CILIP," comments Jill Martin, CILIP's Director Knowledge & Information.  "The big benefit of RSS is that the individual opts in to content of interest, such as the CILIP news feed, so that they are able to choose the information that they want to receive. We will be launching new online services and information throughout the year and, if our members and customers use our RSS service, they can ensure that they don't miss out."

"RSS readers are a growing market and a very handy way to pull in information you are interested in from sites," adds Sarah Woodbridge of CILIP's web site developer cScape.  "Both My MSN and My Yahoo! have recently added web based access to RSS feeds to their personalized homepage services which will no doubt lead to even wider adoption."

To find out more about how an RSS feed can help you keep up to date with developments at CILIP and in the library and information world generally, please go to www.cilip.org.uk/aboutRSS for full details and links to RSS readers that you can download.
