My we are a tough bunch, and probably rightly so.

Overwhelmingly we charge full replacement cost and do not pass on supplier discounts. If the item is out of print or a new edition is out most of us would charge for similar title or new edition. One person would write it off if out of print and one person would charge set fee of £20.

For unpriced publications the charge ranged from £5-£75, one person had a standard replacement charge of £40 for all lost items.

Only one person would charge less if book was close to retention limit in their stock guidelines.

Most charged an admin fee of £5 or £10 although a couple of people said the discount covered the hassle and one person charged £5 per letter.

Everyone seemed to invoice before ordering replacement copy - and this sometimes caused the book to be found, in which case some would still charge an admin fee.

A few people would still charge fines, those of us who had worked in public libraries generally didn't.

One person suggested that the following helps us work together to recover lost items:

our registration forms all have the following statement, signed by the library user: "I agree that, at their discretion, Library staff may reveal to a third party details of items I have borrowed from the Library." Since adding this to the registration form, I've only had one query, and he was happy to sign when I explained it was for recovery of overdue items.

Little old ladies and attack dogs seemed equally popular.
