Patient access to library services

Dear LIS-MED

One of our stakeholders has a lot of project teams looking at various topics such as audit, service design or improvement and guideline development.  These teams  not only include staff but also patients.

Currently we offer patients a reference service.  We do not provide them with ILLs or journal articles nor do they have access to Core Content.  However the patients working in these project teams are not patients in the usual sense of the term.  They are actively involved and contribute towards the work of the stakeholder organisation.

Do you have patients working in project teams in your Trust?  If so, what services do you offer them?  Do you consider them honorary members of the trust for the duration of their activity with a project team?

It seems a shame to ask them to contribute towards the development of a guideline and then not allow them access to resources that will enable them to contribute effectively.  I'd be interested to hear how other library services deal with this type of patient.
