***VISIT TO ASHMOLEAN MUSEUM, OXFORD***
        *Aslib Biosciences Group*

2.15pm on Wednesday 7 September 2005

The Aslib Biosciences Group are arranging a visit to the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford for the exhibition ‘A New Flowering: 1000 Years of Botanical Art’.

This summer exhibition at Oxford’s Ashmolean Museum shows examples from Shirley Sherwood’s private collection of the works of contemporary botanical artists alongside illustrations from historic taxonomic works in the collections of Oxford libraries. It has been very well reviewed in the national press and in Nature (23 June 2005, pp1030-1031).

The visit will offer an opportunity to hear about the purpose and importance of botanical illustration, the work of a botanical artist today, and Oxford’s work in digitizing one of the most famous examples of botanical art, Sibthorp and Smith’s Flora Graeca, several volumes of which are on display.

Following refreshments there will be opportunity to view the exhibition at your own pace with staff on hand to answer your questions. A lavishly illustrated catalogue is available from the museum shop for £20.

There is likely to be a heavy demand for places, so please book early to avoid disappointment! For more information, please contact Roger Mills ([log in to unmask]).
