Well, the health professional isn't a blank canvas, relying entirely on Kumar +ACY- Clark for direction. Ultimately, it is up to them to use their clinical judgement, as to whether time has rendered information redundant, rather as they listen to information from a pharmacist, but don't have to act on it.

One positive aspect of the e-textbook is that it can render the idea of the edition redundant, providing the editorial processes are there to keep it as up-to-date as is humanly possible, (which doesn't come cheap). The product Up-to-Date comes to mind.

Exactly+ADs- +ACY- presumably the information in the 5th edition that has been changed in the 6th is not now life-threatening? If it is then the publishers surely have a responsibility to issue warnings to those who have the 5th edition, explaining exactly what has changed.

So that's Steve told off for wanting to unload old rubbish onto developing countries.
The usefulness of previous editions depends on how extensive and/or significant the revisions in the new edition are. This is something that the publishers won't indicate - after all, they are commercial organisations that want us to buy the latest edition (just as a car manufacturer wants us to buy the latest model)

No we do not. As the Elsevier person responsible for our HINARI and AGORA
participation I feel very strongly that we can and shoud do better than
provide superceded, outdated resources to libraries and researchers in the
developing world. Through HINARI we provide free and unlimited access to
much of Science Direct to most of the world's 100 poorest countries.
Providing access to ebooks is on the HINARI agenda but the team is currently
engaged on other priorities, particularly on solutions to the bandwidth
problem.

For all its problems, the strength of the HINARI/AGORA project is that it is
based on the premise that technology now allows us all to do what we would
always have liked to do - make the latest and best information services
available where previously there was only ingenuity and make-do-and-mend.
It's not perfect. In some places the +ACI-last mile+ACI- bandwidth problem is
actually a +ACI-last couple of thousand miles+ACI- problem, but with HINARI those
seeking to extend broadband across Africa and south Asia have a really
worthwhile benefit they can point to - and in the meantime we can look to
bandwidth conservation measures to keep things up and running.

Hello Tony

Do Elsevier have any plans to make the previous Edition available freely via
Bookshelf on PubMed?

This would be especially helpful for developing countries
