Fit for purpose: the training agenda for LIS workers A Joint CoFHE Mid-West and UC&R BBO Training Day Thursday 3rd March 2005 9.45 - 16.00 Black Horse House, Whiteknights Campus, University of Reading Are we providing and receiving adequate training for our ever changing and expanding role as library and information workers in education? We will examine the current training situation for all levels of library and information workers from library assistants on NVQ courses, through a speaker from a library school to a supervisor and supervisee for chartership and workplace continuing professional development. We will also hear from CILIP on the new Framework of Qualifications. By the end of the day attendees will have had the opportunity to learn both what our professional body and other training providers are expecting from us and what we can expect from them. This event is aimed at staff working at all levels within Library and Information Services. The speakers: Barbara Chivers: Senior Lecturer, School of Computing and Information, University of Central England in Birmingham. Michael Martin: Adviser, Qualifications & Professional Development, CILIP Kathy Paterson: Faculty Team Manager, Economic and Social Sciences, University of Reading. Katherine Battley: Liaison Librarian for History, University of Reading Gordon Connell: Bulmershe Site Librarian, University of Reading Liz Annetts: Assistant Director (User Services and Staff Development), Library, Brunel University Programme 09.45 - 10.15 Registration and coffee 10.15 - 11.00 KEYNOTE SPEECH: Education & training - a university perspective The paper will explore the changing needs of the information profession and how University curricula take a proactive and reactive approach to developing education and training courses. Barbara Chivers will argue for the key role of education at Masters level as well as skills training: a flexible workforce needs adaptable professionals, not just "well-trained" ones. 11.00 - 11.20 Coffee 11.20 - 13.00 Enhancing opportunities, rewarding achievement Michael Martin will talk about CILIP's Framework of Qualifications including its forthcoming Voluntary Revalidation Scheme for chartered members. Michael will lead a workshop to consider the nature and range of evidence we should be collecting for our portfolios. Bring your CVs and see how much you have already done. 13.00 - 13.45 Lunch. Buffet provided 13.45 - 14.30 Staff Development in the Workplace Kathy Paterson will describe how the Staff Development Hour at Reading University Library began seven years ago, what it covers, how it's organised, ways in which it has changed to meet different needs, and attempts to evaluate it. She will also touch on other training opportunities available for Library staff. 14.30 - 15.00 Chartership Programme Gordon Connell (supervisor) and Katharine Battley (trainee) will talk about the chartership programme at Reading University Library. The Library has five trainee liaison librarians working towards CILIP chartership. 15.00 - 15.20 Tea 15.20 - 16.00 Non-professional opportunities Liz Annetts will give an overview of training and career development in library and information work for library assistants and non-professional library staff, now that new opportunities have been opened up by the Framework. 16.00 Close Getting to Black Horse House By car: Enter via Pepper Lane or Shinfield Road entrance.
