WEBLOGS AS INFORMATION RESOURCES
USING AND CREATING THEM

SPEAKERS: PHIL BRADLEY AND GARETH J JOHNSON

BIRMINGHAM CENTRAL LIBRARY, THURSDAY 24TH NOVEMBER - 10.00 - 4.15

Weblogs moved from fad to serious internet resource some time ago. Libraries, schools, universities, law firms and commercial companies are all seeing the value of weblogs in their businesses. Why? Because they offer an easy, fast and effective method of communicating with staff, clients, and anyone else with a mutual interest in what they do.

Weblogs have also become a valuable research tool for information professionals, keeping them up to date with the latest developments in their subject areas. Really Simple Syndication (RSS) is closely allied to weblogs and this further enhances their importance and value for anyone needing to find information on the internet, keep on top of fast moving areas, or let others know what they are doing.

Phil Bradley - widely known and respected for his Internet expertise - will take you through the basics of weblogs, show you several, and explain how they are created. You will learn how to use weblogs and RSS to assist you in your job and to enhance service to your users.

In the afternoon there will be hands-on sessions in creating your own weblog. No knowledge of HTML is required, nor is any technical ability needed. In parallel with each session, Gareth J Johnson (Service and Innovation Officer, Research & Innovation Unit, University of Warwick Library) will present some practical experience of using weblogs as a staff and task management tool that keeps everyone informed of the current state of work in progress.
