This introductory course, outlining the concepts of Metadata, will be
offered in Dublin as part of our summer Training series in Ireland.
Full details of this course below. For more details on our full
Ireland series please contact us at the address below.

AN INTRODUCTION TO METADATA
Metadata is seen by some as the cataloguing of the future, and by
others as an attempt to re-invent the cataloguing wheel. This course
doesn't attempt to reconcile those opposing views, but tries to throw
some light on how metadata functions in an information context.

WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?
It is intended for any information professional wanting to explore this
current aspect of the information management and to consider its effect
on library. It is not a detailed training course on using XML and
similar technical markup languages, but provides a way in to
understanding the issues and examining the benefits.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
At the end of the day delegates will have
* examined varying definitions of metadata
* considered the relationship between metadata and cataloguing
* looked at some major standards used in the library and publishing
world and at related markup languages
* considered current moves towards interoperability and global standards
* practised preparing metadata records using basic Dublin Core
