INTRODUCTION TO MARC 21
10 May 2005, London

This workshop introduces participants to the practical use of the MARC 21 format
and allows them to consider the possibilities that this broad spectrum format can offer
within their library and information context.

The differences between UKMARC and MARC 21 will be briefly considered before
the MARC 21 bibliographic format is presented in detail.

BENEFITS FROM ATTENDING
This introduction to the broad coverage and detailing available in MARC 21 will
enable participants to make more effective choices when considering what elements
to include in a specification where MARC 21 is the format being considered.
The workshop is based on practical use of the MARC 21 format and the MARC 21
authority format. The authority formats are progressively being used by American
systems suppliers to control name and subject authority on their systems.

SPECIAL NOTE
Questions on particular individual systems cannot be addressed during this workshop.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
All staff involved in data creation for information systems where an upgrade will
involve the use of MARC 21. It is also useful for recently appointed managers who
need to know about the potential of the format before producing a bibliographic
record specification for MARC 21.

TRAINERS: Keith Trickey & Jacqui Pearce
Keith and Jacqui have extensive experience in the use and training of the MARC
format and associated professional areas.
