Course Outline
--------------
Statistics play an important role in information and research work. As
well as statistics available through the UK Central Government and the
European Union, there are many other organisations that produce
statistical data of interest to researchers and information professionals.
Such organisations include professional associations, commercial
publishers, local authorities, academic institutions, and trade
associations. The day will identify ways to trace such sources using both
local and national resources. A core element will be identifying
statistics that are freely available but often missed.

The sessions will:

* make clear the distinction between official and unofficial statistics
* trace statistical data using local and national sources
* identify fee based databases for tracing statistical data
* identify free based databases for tracing statistical data
* critically evaluate sources identified

Course Presenters:
Tracy Kent has been the Social Science Librarian at the University of
Birmingham for 10 years with responsibility for providing research support
across the Social Science discipline. As we move into Europe this support
has been extended to cover the plethora of materials from the European
Union - whether part of the legislative process or via the different
statistical houses - which has led to extensive subject knowledge within
this arena. Tracy has also recently set up her own reference software
training company to ensure adequate tracking of key documents located.

Gerald Watkins is currently Subject Librarian with responsibility for
International Relations and Political Science and European Studies at the
University of Birmingham. His background has been in providing an
information service for UK, European and International Governmental
publications within the University of Birmingham. Gerald has also had
extensive experience in tracing statistical data, both official and
unofficial within the academic arena.
