Next Meeting:
Finding Pharmaceutical Information - 27th April 2005

The development and marketing for a new medicine is long, complex and
highly information-intensive. There is a wealth of information on
pharmaceuticals, whether in development or on the market, both freely
available and subscription-based. This workshop will identify key sources
of information relating to the various stages of development and also
information available on current medicines on the market.

The importance of evaluating the quality of the sources of information
will be emphasised and searching for information from a patient's point of
view will also be considered. The focus will be on web-based sources of
information but conventional print sources and related associations or
organisations that provide information will also be identified.

The course is aimed at information professionals in higher education, the
NHS and the pharmaceutical industry. It will also be of value to
publishers, pharmacists and others who provide services to healthcare
sector.

Course content:
* the drug development process - key stages, time-scales, costs and
players
* major sources of R&D information
* secondary sources - consolidators, analysers and digesters
* business information
* information for the public - patients, healthcare professionals and
shareholders

The course presenter
Shaida Dorabjee has been involved in information work for over 25 years,
and spent many years as an information manager in the pharmaceutical
industry, responsible for a variety of library and information functions
covering research and development, business and marketing information. She
has also worked for a research organisation undertaking desk research into
R&D management in the pharmaceutical industry.

Shaida now works as a consultant specialising in information management
and training, particularly in pharmaceutical and healthcare information
and has carried out assignments in the industry as well as the NHS.
