The West Midlands Career Development Group invite you to attend a sponsored
walk to raise money for the Career Development Group's international
projects and celebrate the 110th anniversary of the Group.

Date and time

Sunday 3rd July, meeting at 11am. The walk should take approximately 4
hours to complete.

Who should come along?

Everyone is welcome, including non-sponsored walkers, family and friends.

Walk route

The route will cover approx. 6 miles. Starting at Gas Street Basin, we will
follow Birmingham's nineteenth century New Main Line towards Smethwick. On
the way, we will turn off to follow the eighteenth century Old Main Line
for a short distance, past Smethwick locks and toll house, and will stop
for a picnic lunch by Galton Valley Canal Heritage Centre (free entry for
those who wish to look around).

After returning to the New Main Line, we will go as far as Smethwick Galton
Bridge, famous for its Grade I listed bridge built by Thomas Telford in 1829.

We will catch the train back to the Jewellery Quarter for a stroll through
this characterful area, taking in parts of the Findings Trail and Charm
Bracelet Trail which are marked by specially designed pavement plaques.

After returning to the canal at Newhall Street, we will follow it back to
Brindley Place, near the starting point of the walk, in time for a
well-earned drink!

About the Career Development Group's international work

All sponsorship money raised will go to support the Group's international
projects. We are currently supporting VSO librarian Sarah Ellis, who is
volunteering in Uganda, and have recently completed a project to support
the purchase of books for Tholimfundo Primary School in Soweto. Please see

About the Career Development Group sponsored walk

2005 marks the 110th anniversary of the Group, and to celebrate Group
members will be walking 110 miles! Each of the Group's local divisions is
organising a sponsored walk in their area, so if you can't make it to the
West Midlands, why not see if you could join one of the other walks around
the country? See
