LAST CALL FOR PAPERS: LEARNING DEVELOPMENT IN HIGHER EDUCATION NETWORK, 3RD SYMPOSIUM / LAUNCH OF THE LEARNHIGHER CETL

  

I am pleased to announce that Liverpool Hope University will be our host for the 3rd Symposium of the LDHEN, and that the event will also mark the public launch of LearnHigher: the Centre for Excellence in Learning Development*.

 

Our Keynote Speaker will be Geoff Layer, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Learning & Teaching), Professor of Lifelong Learning and Dean of the School of Lifelong Education and Development at the University of Bradford (see below for more information).

 

Our theme for the day is: “Excellence in Learning Development - What Could it Be?”. Ideas or expressions of interest for workshops or papers are now being sought: If you would like to submit a proposal, please send a brief description (c250 – 300 words, preferably in a Word file), along with your full title/contact details, to me by 4pm on Friday 16th December. These will considered by the LDHEN Steering Group and we will announce which proposals have been accepted by 4pm on Monday 16 th January 2006.

 

All presentation and workshop sessions will be 45 minutes in duration, including approx 25 minutes for presentation/activities, followed by approx 20 minutes for discussion. There will be a chair for each session. LearnHigher is proposing to publish papers from the conference.

 

The cost of the day will be just £60.00 per particpant. To book your place, contact Debbie Bell ([log in to unmask]) as soon as posible – we are liimited to 120 participants. Further details about the event will be issued in early 2006 to those who apply.

Information about the Keynote Speaker:

 

Geoff Layer is Pro-Vice Chancellor (Learning & Teaching), Professor of Lifelong Learning and Dean of the School of Lifelong Education and Development at the University of Bradford.

He is also the Director of Action on Access which is HEFCE/LSC's Widening Participation Co-ordination Team.

He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and was awarded the O.B.E. for services to Higher Education in 2003.

Geoff is actively involved in a number of Bradford, West Yorkshire and National initiatives. He is a non-executive Director of the Higher Education Research Opportunities (HERO), a Trustee of the National Open College Network, a member of the Executive of the National Institute for Adult and Continuing Education, a non-executive director of Careers Bradford, a Trustee of West and North Yorkshire Open College Network, a member of Bradford's Learning Partnership and the Bradford Strategic Co-ordinating Group for 14-19 education and training.

Action on Access was first established in January 2000 to support the HEFCE Widening Participation activities. It was re-appointed to December 2005 with a much extended remit, and the Team is now also supported by the LSC and DfES with the following role:

To provide national support and co-ordination for funding bodies' widening participation strategy including the support for Aimhigher. Elements of that strategy include mainstream formula funding, special initiatives, specific national development and pilot projects

He was also Director of the HEFCE Innovations Co-ordination Team from 2000 to 2002.
