Hi again *,

Unfortunally the problem still persist:

i've reinstalled several times the atp*.rpm
I've rebuilt the rpm db (rm -f __*; rpm --rebuilddb...)

...

nothing happens.

I've also tried to upgrade the rpm package (rpm-4.0.4-7x.18 ==>
rpm-4.0.5-1.7x) ... in this case the ENTIRE rpm db was unaccessible... I
had to downgrade to previuos one!

At last I launch a "strace apt-get update" ...here just the last part of
the output (if needed i can attach the entire file)

I had the same problem yesterday. In my case the problem was a broken
rpm database, rebuilding the database helped:

rm -f /var/lib/rpm/__db*
rpm -vv --rebuilddb

(Or read more at http://www.rpm.org/hintskinks/repairdb/)
