Dear colleagues

I'm emailing the HLG list to find volunteers to help with the compilation of the Core Collection of Medical Books (CC).

You may remember that this booklet of recommeded health titles was previously published by the Medical Information Working Party (MIWP).    The MIWP was disbanded at the start of this year but HLG committee agreed to continue with this work as it complements similar work done by Libraries for Nursing (LfN).

Melanie Brocklehurst of London South Bank University and myself are happy to continue with this work, but we want to recruit a broader team in order to ensure that the CC reflects the requirements of all libraries who use clinical information.  We also want to work with HLG members since the newly revised CC will be produced by HLG.

We have spent the first part of the year in consulting with the LfN and RCN team who produced the CC for Nursing and also with the staff of Tomlinsons who coordinated its publictation

Are you willing to participate in the compilation of the 2005 CC?   The new list will have these sections:

Accident & emergency medicine
AIDS & HIV

Once we have a clearer idea of how many people can work on this then I will develop a timetable.  We have agreed with Tomlinsons to have the list ready by March next year.   Tomlinsons will then check the bibliographic details and the in-print status of each title before producing the list for summer 2006.

I anticipate that we will be able to do most of the initial work by email but, towards the end of this year, we will need to hold meetings for which we wiill be able to pay travel expenses.   They will probably be held in London.

If you have specialist knowledge of an area of clinical medicine  then please let me know in which areas you can help.  If your experience in stock selection is more general,  then your skills will still be valuable to us.   It is difficult to give a precise estimate of the time commitment  but I estimate that each section will take about two to three days to research,

The MIWP has developed a selection methodology which I can send to interested individuals.

It would help me if you could let me know if you are able to participate in this by the end of Friday 29 July.  If you're not able to make a commitment before this date then please still get in touch.

I look forward to hearing from you soon

Best wishes

Richard
