Two GIS vacancies at British Waterways:

Title:    GIS Specialist
Location: Warrington (moving to Wigan in Spring 2006) (REF: GIS34)
          Gloucester (REF: GIS46)
Salary:   c. £19,000

British Waterways cares for and protects some 2,000 miles of the nation’s
waterways. This network is of vital environmental and historical
importance and we are firmly committed to ensuring that such a unique

we’re currently looking for two enthusiastic people with the skills and
experience to drive our work forward.

Role and Requirements:
The GIS Specialist will have the responsibility of supporting the
provision of GIS services at the waterway unit and contributing to the
overall management of GIS within BW.

Key aspects of this role are:
•Data management to ensure the quality and integrity of data held within
GIS and SAP - should be empowered and able to report status and escalate
issues to senior management
•Develop local GIS data sets and applications where appropriate within the
framework of corporate systems and information
•Training of local staff on specific GIS applications and in simple
plan/map production
•Provide technical advice and support to non GIS experts
•Perform survey and research work supporting all teams within the Waterway
Unit
•Provide GIS expertise and advice on project work
•Liaise with third parties regarding data transfer and purchase
•Support the development and management of GIS within BW under the
guidance and direction of the Geographic Information Group
•Assist the implementation of national and local standards for GIS
•Create and manage corporate GIS data sets
•Understand the key business drivers to ensure that GIS delivers real and
relevant business benefits
•The Gloucester position will also provide GIS technical advice and
support to the Regeneration team involved in the Cotswold & Droitwich
regeneration projects.
Key skills:
•Degree and post graduate qualification in GIS or at least 2 years post
graduate work experience in GIS
•High degree of ICT awareness and computer literacy (including knowledge
of appropriate business software and systems)
•The ability to analyse and prioritise effectively will be important,
along with excellent communication and inter-personal skills.
•Knowledge and experience of ESRI ArcGIS and ArcSDE
•Knowledge and experience of ESRI ArcIMS and ArcPAD would be an advantage
•Knowledge and experience of web development using HTML, ASP and
JavaScript would also be an advantage
