The UHI Millennium Institute has recently been awarded funds by the European Commission's Northern Periphery Programme for a project on large-scale spatial planning on northern Europe.

Two positions are available, based at the Centre for Mountain Studies in Perth www.cms.uhi.ac.uk 

Strategic/Spatial Planning Researcher c. £33,000, 30 months

Your main responsibilities will include inventory of policies/strategies and participatory approaches in the Highlands and Islands; consultation of stakeholders on priorities for spatial planning; definition and alignment of strategies for the Highlands and Islands; organisation of workshops; and development of a set of good practices for integrated and participatory spatial planning/development with international partners.

You will have excellent communication skills, an ability to think strategically and creatively, at least three years experience in strategic and development planning, and an ability to develop strong working relationships with diverse stakeholders and international partners.

GIS/Spatial Data Coordinator c. £26,000, 18 months

Your work will mainly comprise inventory/mapping of spatial and socio-economic data; investigation of existing metadata and data transfer standards and production of a proposal for a common approach; and review of the uses of GIS in regional spatial planning in the Highlands and Islands.

You will have extensive experience of managing databases, producing digital maps and associated datasets at a variety of scales, using desktop GIS, and using and developing metadata, and an ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders.
