GEM members might be interested in learning of two interpretive training courses John will be teaching at Plas Tan y Bwlch (Snowdonia NP Study Center in Wales) for 2006.

May 9-11  Planning and Design of Interpretive Media.  We will cover what makes media actually "interpretive", interpretive design standards, objective and outcome based design, evaluation of interpretive media, and more.  A copy of the text book "Interpretive Master Planning" will be provided as the course text.   Participants can bring interpretive panel or exhibit projects with them to work on in the course.  The course will also examine questions like " if you spend 800 pounds on an interpretive board - how do you know you are going to get 800 pounds worth of benefits from that board?", plus a look at state-of-the-art interpretive panel materials, costs, contracting issues and more.  We will also address how to plan really "interpretive" exhibits that Provoke, Relate, and Reveal your message - and evaluation strategies for exhibits to pre-test them before you sign-off on them.  Do they Work - accomplish their objectives - did they have objectives to start with?

September 12-14 Interpretive Master Planning.  This course will walk you through the state-of-the-art process for developing interpretive master plans for parks, historic sites, and related interpretive facilities.  Participants are asked to bring an interpretive planning project with them to work on in the course and take back a solid draft of your sites interpretive master plan.  A copy of the text book "Interpretive Master Planning" will be provided as the course text book.  We will look at how to plan interpretive experiences and create memories for your site, and consider marketing aspects of your interpretive plan, use interpretation to help accomplish management objectives, and interpretation product development as well.
