ALM LONDON TRAINING EVENT
EVERY CHILD MATTERS: Addressing the learning needs of 'Looked After' children and young people via archives, libraries and museums

Venue: The Foundling Museum, 40 Brunswick Square, Camden, London WC1N 1AZ
Dates: Tuesday 6th December 2005; & repeated on Thursday 8th December 2005
Cost: £50 + VAT per delegate

This one-day training event - jointly hosted by ALM London, the Inner Vision Project and the Foundling Museum - provides an opportunity for archive, library and museum practitioners to explore the key proposals and impacts of the government’s Every Child Matters policy and outcomes framework, and relate this information to the provision of learning opportunities for children and young people via the heritage sector.

A specific focus of this training day will be active involvement in group discussion and creative learning activities designed to help delegates gain new insights and effective strategies for supporting the educational and personal development needs of ‘Looked After Children.’

The session will be facilitated by the consultant Jenny Mitchell, founder of the Inner Vision Project (an arts educational project specifically for children and young people with experience of public care).

AIMS:
The session will provide opportunities for service managers, policy-makers and frontline staff working in the archive, library and museum sector to:

* Investigate and discuss the 5 main outcomes of the Every Child Matters policy in relation to child health, safety, educational achievement, civic engagement and economic well-being

* Learn about the Inner Vision Project and hear examples of previous work undertaken within arts and heritage education settings that has successfully supported the learning and personal development needs of looked after children and young people

* Explore the roles and responsibilities of Social Services and other professionals working with ‘at risk’ children and young people - and gain a greater understanding of how the work of these service providers can be supported via the archive, library and museum sector

* Work collaboratively with other sector practitioners to develop a collective ‘check list’ of good practice for re-evaluating policy development and service delivery in ways that better meet the needs of looked after children and young people.

Places are limited to 25 delegates per session, so please complete and return the booking form as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

NB: The term ‘Looked After Children’ (LAC) was first defined in the 1989 Children Act and refers to children and young people for whom the local authority shares or has exclusive parental responsibilities (previously referred to as ‘children in care’).
