Yes, that was it: Hero, in which the brush (ie, pen) became mightier than the sword -- wonderful example of writing in film.

        That would be Hero.....

Hero is a symphony of film that presents the viewer with a feast of colour and lyrical cinematography. The camera works like the calligraphers brush dancing about the screen. Slipping back and forth through timeframes to express variations of the central narrative this film often turns into a calligraphy growing out of the silence of the soul, creating a rhythmic tension reflecting the inner turmoil of the major characters. The exuberance and energy of Hero, reflects a passionate love for China countered with a deep sorrow and respect for individual sacrifice. This is a beautifully visual film of allegory and symbolism.

Speaking of blood, there was a beautiful Asian film that came out last year
(I don't think it was the House of Flying Daggers, but the title escapes
me), which makes a link between ink and blood. It begins with a scene of
calligraphers, writing in read, and the pens/brushes become swords. As I
recall, the theme explores the written word as a means of transcending
warfare, I believe. A fantastic film.
