Since you are considering issues of changing genre and remakes, you might consider Sam Raimi's remake of his own film: Evil Dead (1981). In 1987, Raimi released Evil Dead II: Dead by Dawn. He used the same actor from the first film, used some of the same characters, used the same themes, and reproduced many scenes shot for shot. The main difference between these two films is that the first film was a horror film, but the remake was a comedy.
