Voice recognition packages will work with non-Microsoft software so long as the software runs in Windows or Apple OS and provides an accessible interface. Dragon NaturallySpeaking is the best package for PC (Windows) and IBM Viavoice seems to be the best package for Mac OS. If your payroll/HR software runs on PCs (or Macs) but doesn't seem to work with voice input software, I suggest you tell the supplier to provide a more accessible interface to their applications. If your HR/Payroll software does not run under Windows or Mac OS (e.g. the system uses a main(frame) central computer connected to user terminals) you might have problems... Voice input software will probably need to run on the terminal rather than the central computer. If your system runs under Unix or Linux, you might be able to cobble together a voice recognition solution - but be prepared for serious technical problems getting this to work. If you can use a PC to connect to the central computer (e.g. using 'terminal software' or a web-based interface) then you might be able to use Dragon NaturallySpeaking. Try the Professional edition and arrange for specialist training. I suggest you contact the people who developed the system (this appears to be Northgate http://www.northgate-is.com ) and ask for advice. If they cannot give specific advice on accessing their custom system/terminals via voice input methods, ask for support in using a PC (or Mac) to connect to the system then try out Dragon NaturallySpeaking on the PC acting as a terminal.
