This is a difficulty that we have also faced for a few of our
students. In one of the cases The Snowden Award was applied to for extra
funding and was successful. It maybe worth contacting them ASAP as I
think they close for applications at the end of August and request a lot
of information.

The other option we have explored in all of these cases is an
application to the university hardship fund and we have been fortunate
in securing some funding this way. However, I should emphasise that
this has not been viewed as a long term solution to the problem and we
have been advised that the generosity shown in this instance cannot be
repeated. The concern is, that this issue of the DSA funding not being
adequate will arise time and again, as more and more students with
diverse needs apply to universities. This is exactly what should be
happening of course, but how to achieve a balance in what can safely be
put in place, given the limits on funding causes a complexity that needs
to be addressed across the sector.

I hope this information has helped, if you come across any other
solutions I would be very glad to hear about them!

I have a student who is blind and who depends on the DSA for his
support for his music tech HND - he is about to pass and will get a
place on the 'top up' BA, with us

We have used all of his allowance to provide specialist teaching
/ support for him whilst he has been on the degree - the funds have only
just been adequate. The top up degree will take 45 weeks rather than the
30 of the HND, but my student will need the same if not more weekly
support, his DSA funds will not cover this.

It seems unfair that the DSA funds do not cover a course that is
of longer duration and I'd be grateful for some advice as to how
colleagues have managed this situation

        many thanks
