Slight confusion here; I think Roz meant

ocular onchocerciasis

Ocular complications, such as keratitis, iridocyclitis, or retrobulbar neuritis, caused by the microfilariae of Onchocerca volvulus.

a definition from http://cancerweb.ncl.ac.uk/cgi-bin/omd?river+blindness , the very useful Online Medical Dictionary at http://cancerweb.ncl.ac.uk/cgi-bin/omd?action=Home&query= (this has replaced the old Dictionary of Rare Diseases).

Google will produce a lot hits under onchocerciasis for more detail, but you're dealing with a form of visual impairment that would benefit from the kind of equipment generally available to students under the DSA (e.g., ZoomText Xtra speech/magnification).  I guess there maybe problems with funding, otherwise the answer would be to organise a formal assessment.

Sounds like Meares-Irlen syndrome.  There’s lots of information if you Google.  The ‘river’ symptoms relate to perceived movement of text where it can appear as if the text is separated by ‘rivers’ of white background or bunched text.

We have a student come to us with river blindness and he is experiencing blurred vision, difficulties with reading and computing. Has anyone supported a student with this and what did you do? He is an international student…
