The first warning Sally offers appears to be a variation on an urban myth which has been circulating for some time. You cannot in this country connect an outside call to another outgoing line - or if you can your switchboard is in breach of telecoms regulations. Sadly this sort of message has been given credibility by being circulated by unthinking members in police forces amongst others - usually without checking the accuracy first. While managing telecoms a few years ago I made enquiries with both BT and another company and was categorically assured the first scam is not possible. The second one is really a general warning that some telephone numbers carry very high costs. Any 0709 number is going to be quite expensive. Even an 0870 is at "National rates" which are higher than most BT customers pay on their standard packages.
