Sally Further to his reply to me David has sent the following that may be of help as well Doug Douglas Colyer -----Original Message----- From: David Kennedy Sent: 02 March 2005 14:26 To: Doug Colyer Subject: RE: Student data and local councils Dougal, If you want to put an answer on the website concerned, I would suggest you write something along the lines of: The Social Security Administration (Fraud) Act 1997 gives Local Authorities powers to obtain information from various sources, but not however, from schools, universities or colleges of further/higher education. Local Authorities do have the power to request information from educational establishments but under the 2001 Social Security Administration (Fraud) Act. Under the 2001 Act an authorised officer must make the request in writing and must provide his certificate of authorisation with the request. -----Original Message----- From: Doug Colyer Sent: 02 March 2005 11:20 To: David Kennedy Subject: FW: Student data and local councils David I thought you may wish to give the list the benefit of your experience and knowledge, The list is [log in to unmask] Doug Douglas Colyer -----Original Message----- From: Sally Justice [mailto:[log in to unmask]] Sent: 28 February 2005 09:15 To: [log in to unmask] Subject: Student data and local councils How do colleagues handle requests from local Authorities who say they are investigating Housing and Council Tax Benefit fraud who ask for details of a student's status as a full or part time student and the terms dates quoting the Social Security Administration Act (Fraud) 1997 and the Social Security Administration 1992.
